The Lezen & Schrijven Film Awards 2011 (LSFA) (The Reading & Writing Film Awards) is a project that through film the often invisible problem of illiteracy bring to the attention of a wide audience. Simultaneously, the LSFA offers a platform for young filmmakers and their talent. LSFA is an initiative of Starsound Productions and Stichting Lezen & Schrijven (Reading & Writing Foundation). The foundation was launched om 27 May 2004, its objective being to devote attention to the 1.5 million members of the Dutch population who, due to literacy related problems, are unable to participate fully within society. Stichting Lezen & Schrijven aims to stimulate discussion about this problem and to contribute to its alleviation.
The LSFA is a national competition and challenges Dutch young filmmakers to make a short film about illiteracy. The diversity of submissions were 12 films eligible for development their plans. In May 2011 the authors started with the productions. In September, the films will be judged and nominated by a jury.
On Septermber 27 the films will be shown at the Nederlands Film Festival 2011 (Dutch Film Festival 2011) in Utrecht. During that evening will also be five awards in the categories of Best Director, Best Script, Beste Actor/Actress and Best Film awarded. There is also a award of the Taalambassadeurs (Language Ambassadors). This prize will be awarded to one of the filmmakers by a panel of experts (ex-illiterate).
